They could have been home warm in bed, dreaming of the approaching holidays.  Instead, about 100 Staples track and field alumni, parents and current athletes braved frigid temperatures at Compo Beach early Sunday December 21 to raise more than $1,000 for the Laddie Lawrence Scholarship fund.

The 3rd Annual Staples Alumni Run, a 2-mile fun race in and around Compo Beach, drew twice as many people as the previous two years along with donations to what is becoming one of the most popular fund-raising activities among Westport Area runners.

In addition to $1,000 raised at the event, Jeff Palmer, Chairman of the Pequot Runners Club, announced that $15,000 had been earmarked from the Pequot Runners’ annual Thanksgiving Day Race in Southport to help fund the Lawrence Scholarships.  Since inaugurating the scholarship program in 1999, the Pequot Runners have granted scholarships of $10,000 each to four graduating Staples athletes to help them attend college.  Past recipients, all on hand for Alumni Run, are:  Kelsey Donahue; Michael Karam; Jansen Lewis and Adam Polite.

Palmer said the Pequot Runners are hoping to eventually raise enough money to make the scholarship self-funding and to expand the number of recipients each year if possible.  Palmer said most of the funds are raised through the Pequot Runners as well as the Westport Roadrunners Summer Series participants.

Ray Prezkop, a Staples Alum attending the Alumni Run, said this of longtime Staples track and field coach, after who the scholarship is named:  “I have known Laddie for about 35 years and without taxing my brain in the least I cannot think of any other individual whom I hold in higher regard.  His unswerving dedication to the individuals whose lives he helped mold is as evident now as it was when we first met.  He has over the years been my coach, my teammate, my friend, and a character model, truly an exceptional individual who I feel extremely fortunate to know – thank you Laddie.”

The winner of the 3rd Annual Alumni Run was 2002 Staples Graduate Emre Kennedy, a standout Staples cross-country and track athlete and now a student at the University of Virginia-Arlington.
