He won a charity 5K at Yale this spring and then a 5K uphill race with an obstacle course called "Rock the Gauntlet". But his best race was on Labor Day when he won the 19 and under division of the 20K US National Championships (see Yale Daily News article.) He trained with Henry Wynne and Brad Payne all summer.

DURHAM, N.C. - The top marks posted by U.S. athletes were compiled and released last week.  Several Blue Devils were noted as recording some of the best performances of 2010. High school, colligate and professional athletes were all considered.

On the Men's side, Cory Nanni's 3:42.07 at the Carolina Classic notched him the No. 40 best time in the 1500 meters while Ryan McDermott's 8:44.36 in the 3k steeplechase at the NCAA First Round netted him the No. 28 spot. Current freshmen Tanner Anderson acquired the No. 21 position by jumping 7' 3.25" while still attending East Burke high school.

The men also had three relay teams make the list. The men's 4x800, comprised of Sean-Pat Oswald, Stephen Clark, Chris Rowland and Matt Marriott, secured the No. 25 spot with a 7:26.94 finish at the New Balance Colligate Invitational. Nanni, Oswald, Marriott and McDermott also headed up the No. 16 ranked DMR with a time of 9:34.29 at the Alex Wilson Invitational at Notre Dame. Indoor 2008-2009
February 28th/March 1st
With high school track quiet this weekend, you can take a look at several alumni who are competing.

 - Remi Ray and Cam Marantz  are at the Ivy League Hepts at Harvard. Going into the Hepts, Cam has the 9th best 5K time in the Ivies(14:47.35). As for Remy ...On the Yale site, I read the following: In the longer sprints, watch for juniors Remi Ray and David Soiles, who are both ranked top-three in the league for the 500-meter dash. At the BU Terrier Classic in January, Ray set a new Yale record of 1:02.09, beating the old record of 1:02.43 set by Olympian Larry Miller in 1986. Ray's time in nearly 1.5 seconds faster than the next fastest time in the league this year.

For the 500 heat, see Flotrak M500 H1.In the 500 finals, Remi placed third running 1:03.98. He followed this up as a member of the 4x4 relay running 3:16.78. His leg of the relay was excellent! See it all on Flotrak 500 and 4x4

Alumni Update 5/12/08
Despite being slightly injured (hamstring, quad) and only running three times this spring, Charlie Stoebe('04) ended his Dartmouth track career very well. In the Penn Relays, his Dartmouth DMR team came in sixth in the Championship Division, that included most major track schools, including world record holder Texas. His 400 split was 47.8. In his last Ivy meet, the Dartmouth 4x400 relay team came in second to Cornell, despite being seeded 6th. With that, he made second team all Ivy.Next up after graduation, is being a member of the combined Dartmouth and Brown track teams who will have several meets in the United Kingdom against teams like Oxford and Cambridge.

Cameron Marantz('05) is continuing his track career while attending Princeton. Recently, he ran 14:54.81 for 5K at the Sam Howell Invitational and 8:30.53 for 3K at a quad meet with Penn, Villanova & Rutgers.

Alumni Update...

The email below was sent to the website...2/09/08

I just got back to New Haven after a very exciting and special track meet because, in addition to the stellar competition, I was able to see familiar faces who, though running in new colors with SCSU, Dartmouth, Tufts and Wesleyan across their singlets, represented Staples Track and Field nonetheless. What made the day even more special was the phone call I received from my younger brother telling me that he'd gotten 6th in the 600m and, this with his ecstatic teammates cheering in the background, that Staples had won its 9th Consecutive class L championship.  To both Staples teams, congratulations!  The Legacy is still in good hands and, with a ballooning student population moving us up to class LL, you guys officially closed the books on one state record I think shall never be broken.  I should also let you know that Charlie Stoebe and I, after going 3, 4 in the 500m at Boston, are hoping to go 1, 2 in the same race at the Ivy League Championship, taking place three weeks from today at Cornell.

Best of luck at Opens and beyond,

-Remi

From Casey August...Recently Remi Ray('06) and Charlie Stoebe('04) met up on and off the track at Coxe Cage.
Cross Country 2006
From Ted Sullivan...

He writes ... Here is a photo of the Middlebury girls cross country team that won both the New England and National Div III Championships. Annie had a great season and ran 7th for the team, putting her on varsity and giving her the privilege to compete in the NCAA tournament as a freshman. They had horrible conditions on the course in West Chester Ohio, running in standing water and mud that was at times ankle deep. It was a very close race, with Middlebury's five finishing first but the Amherst team only 1 point behind! I saw Jason Hanrahan there, painted in Tufts colors, rooting for the "Jumbos."

Wondering what Charlie Stoebe('04) was doing during his summer at Dartmouth? It appears he was having fun while bonding with his classmates...Each student spends one summer at Dartmouth. One of the big weekends is called "fieldstock", and one of the events of the weekend is a chariot race. He was a puller on one of the chariot teams along with another track runner, - needless to say they won!

Outdoor Track 2006
Layla Naficy ('04) placed 5th in the 3K Steeplechase at the Centennial Conference Championships last weekend. She also ran a personal best of 18:52 in the 5K to place 12th. Although she's qualified for ECAC's in both events, Layla is hanging up her spikes for this season to concentrate on final exams!

This is an unbelivable time! Congratulations!
At the Penn Relays, Charlie Stoebe('04) and three other Dartmouth sophomores broke the 17 year old school DMR record by running 9:37.61! The splits were 3:00.9, Charlie Stoebe 48.1, 1:50.9, and 3:57.7.

- At the NESCAC Championships, Alex Battaglino('03)  ran 31:24 for 10,000 meters!  Tyler Lonsdale('04) , running the first 10,000 of his college career, finished a strong 5th. Grant Burgess('04)  set another PR, besting his previous PR by 18 seconds in the 3000 Steeplechase, finishing in 9:41 to qualify for the All New England Championships. Jesse Gaylord('02)  competed in the 800 with a time of 2:02 and ran a very strong leg in the 4 X 400 relay.  Will Bartholomew('04) ran very well, posting a 4:11 in the 1500.

The regular season of collegiate outdoor track and field is short and, particularly in the Northeast, filled with bad weather. Sometimes times, heights and distances are more of a testament to the athlete's willingness to battle the elements than to their conditioning and preparation.
Keisha Regular(04) ran  17.03 for the 110 hurdles and jumped 1.50m in the high jump.
Alex Battaglino('03) ran 15:08.72 for 5K this past week at the Little 3 Championships.
Charlie Stoebe('04) ran 48.82 for 400m.
Tyler Lonsdale('04) ran 15:20.40 at the State of Maine Track and Field Championships.
Jesse Gaylord '06 took third place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.94 seconds at the Hamilton Invitational.
Adam Polite('02) looks to be preparing for the outdoor decathlon. He is the USMMA's top performer in the 400m, 110HH, high jump, long  jump, and pole vault.

Ephmen Compete at George Davis Invitational
The men’s track and field team traveled to UMass-Lowell on Saturday to compete in the George Davis Invitational, a competitive meet where some hoped to post solid marks and others simply wanted to get in a good workout. The meet was not scored by team, but the Ephmen managed to capture four event titles and several runner-up finishes.
The day started off on the track with the 3000-meter steeplechase, where the Ephs were led by Grant Burgess’ ‘08 fourth place finish. Burgess’ smooth hurdling form, especially over the water jumps, produced a new personal best time of 9:59 that he will look to drop even further in the coming weeks.

Championship season will commence next weekend with the Little Three meet, hosted by Wesleyan University, where the Ephmen will look to defend their title.

Pioneering the Anza Trail with Grant Burgess(04)

This January, a group of six students from Williams College, located in Williamstown, MA, will travel to Nogales, Arizona, and trek the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail.  After a month of running and biking across the diverse terrain of desert expanses, forest trails, and California coastland, the group will arrive in San Francisco just as Anza did more than two centuries prior.  This is the first time a group has attempted to complete the trail in its entirety solely by running and biking.  Anza’s original expedition was a pioneering venture; in a similar manner, this group views themselves as pioneers in their unique endeavor.  The purpose of the journey is to observe and experience the culture of southern Arizona and the California coast by retracing Anza’s footsteps.  Through this goal, more significant effects will be achieved.  The group will come to appreciate the effect of the Anza expedition on the development of today’s culture, and subsequently be able to communicate this link back to the people living in these areas.  In this way, a multitude of communities will be able to reconnect with their heritage through an awareness of this historic trail.
In order to appreciate the impact of the historic trail on the area's culture today, the group decided that they must travel through the area without the support of a motorized vehicle.  By doing this, they will also most fully appreciate the difficulties of an overland journey by completing the trail solely under human power.  This will therefore engender a greater understanding of how the journey must have been like for Anza himself.

New! Williams Wins ECAC
Coming into Saturday's ECAC Championship hosted by Connecticut College, the men's cross country team's "second seven" runners knew they had a chance to make history. Despite the traditional strength of the squad’s 8th-14th runners, the Ephmen had never quite put together the right race at the right time to win this coveted Championship. This year, however, the group had trained and raced together so well all season that they felt the time had finally arrived. All of them had dreamed of a spot in Williams’ top-seven at some point during the season, and now, in their final race of the year, these seven Ephs wanted to show that they could hold their own as a Varsity squad. In a race Head Coach Pete Farwell called, "One of the best team races I've seen since we won the NCAA title in 1995", the Ephmen attacked from behind to capture the victory with 46 points. Bates College placed second with 71 points, while the College of New Jersey claimed third place with 149. The race had a total of 265 finishers on 38 scoring teams.
